Our program is a Hybrid Delivery Format (Asynchronous learning via Canvas for Aviation non-flight courses and Synchronous learning for Flight courses via In-person Ground Training at San Marcos Regional Airport).

Verification Process: After students have declared the Aviation Science concentration, they will get an Enrollment Packet from Coast Flight with instructions to upload documents for flight training via DocuSign. Verification documents includes 1st Class Medical Exam Certificate, Driver's license/government IDs, any additional requirements from FAA, and TSA checklist.

How do I apply for the aviation program?
You will apply at Apply Texas Common Application and choose the BAAS degree option. Once you have been admitted, you will need to sign up for New Student Orientation (NSO) as a new student or transfer student. Once you sign up for NSO, the College of Applied Arts Academic Advisers will call you to declare the Aviation Science Concentration. After you declare the concentration, you will be referred to Summer Hogan to complete additional aviation program requirements such as submitting proof of your 1st class medical exam certificate, government IDs, and proof of flight hours/certificates (if applicable).

I am a current student at Texas State University, how do I apply for the aviation science program?

Is this part 141 or 61 program? How many flight hours will I need to complete?
This program is part 141. The total hours including simulator and check ride is 301.5 hours. Actual Flight hours with Coast Flight is 264 hours. Actual Simulator hours with Coast Flight is 25.5 hours. The actual DPE exam hours are 12 hours.

What does the TXST BAAS Aviation Science Partnership Entail?
Texas State University has partnered with Coast Flight (the professional pilot school at San Marcos Airport), and Texas Aviation Partners to establish the BAAS Aviation Science Program. The agreement partnership was signed by all parties on Monday, June 17, 2024, at the San Marcos Airport.

Can I do the flight training courses at a Coast Flight facility near my city/region in Texas or in the country?
Since the first-year is considered the proof-of-concept year for students, Texas State University BAAS Aviation Science students will be trained at the San Marcos Airport by Coast Flight.

How many credits is the Aviation program? What does BAAS stand for?
The BAAS Aviation Science Program is a 120 credit hours program. BAAS stands for Bachelor’s of Applied Arts and Sciences.

How many students are you accepting per semester or year?
There is no cap on the number of students admitted to the program. However, there is an enrollment cap for each aviation course, and there is an enrollment cap for each semester.

What is the Program Delivery Format?
The Aviation program is Hybrid-Distance Education, which means that there is asynchronous learning via Canvas course and synchronous learning via in-person ground flight training at San Marcos Airport at the Coast Flight Professional Pilot School.

How many instructors will you be using (thinking about the wait period for training and check-rides)?
There are dozens of flight licensed pilot instructors at the Coast Flight school who will be training students for ground flight. In addition, there would be Texas State University aviation faculty who will be teaching students about subject specific content knowledge via Canvas course. BAAS Aviation Science students will learn from Coast Flight Instructors as well as Texas State University Aviation Faculty.

How long is each flight training course? What can be expected with flight training?
Each of the seven (7) flight training courses delivered by Coast Flight will last a duration of 16 weeks. Students will be scheduled 5 days a week for 5-8 scheduled events with Coast. This will be a fast-paced program with 16 weeks to complete a required flight training course.

How long is each non-flight aviation course?
Each non-flight aviation course is a 16-week duration.

How many credit hours are required to complete the program for someone who already holds a degree?
The BAAS Aviation Science program is 120 credits. You can transfer up to 72 credits towards the BAAS degree.

I have a bachelor's degree; do I apply as a second-degree seeking student for the aviation program?
Yes, you will apply as a second-degree student for the aviation program via Apply Texas application (for State of TX residents) or the Common Application (for other states' residents).

Are there any Financial Aid available and how do I apply?

Can I transfer from an out-of-state aviation program to the Texas State University aviation program?
You can apply to the Texas State University aviation program via Apply Texas application or Common Application portal as a transfer student.

I have my pilot certificate, medical exam certificate, and passed the FAA ground school exam/pilot exam, will I skip some flight training courses?
Based on your document’s evaluation and assessment, Coast Flight and the OWLS Department will work closely with Applied Arts Advising Center to determine your program plan to complete the aviation program. However, if Coast Flight determines that your pilot exam and medical certification are not valid, you will be asked to do another medical exam and start the program from the sequential order as described in the program catalog.

Will my veteran benefits apply to this program?
Federal GI Bill® benefits can be used once Coast Flight school is approved. Benefits are currently capped at a little over $28,000 per academic year. Students using their GI Bill® will still be going through the University's VA department to utilize their benefit which will cover up to the full benefit rate each academic year, as assessed by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The GI Bill® will not be available for the Fall 2024 term due to the ongoing approval process, therefore requesting backpay at a later date for the Fall 2024 semester is not an option.

What about the Hazelwood Act?
The seven flight aviation courses are TXST Extension courses and per TXST policy, all Extension courses are NOT Hazelwood benefits eligible. Other non-flight aviation courses are eligible for Hazlewood benefits which will waive all applicable tuition and fees.
